The first worldwide release of Nintendos hardware was an instant worldwide success. Many classic games and franchises have their origins on this 8-Bit hardware which sold more than 120 million units worldwide. It received a successor with the NES 2 in the USA and Japan. It cemented Nintendos status as the biggest player in worldwide videogames business. This lasted until the approach of the Playstation in the 90ies.
